Description
A comforting classic featuring tender hamburger steaks in a rich gravy, perfect for family gatherings and winter nights.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
- 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
- 1 Egg (Beaten)
- 1 Onion (Finely diced)
- 2 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Black pepper
- 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
- 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
- 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
- 1 cup Heavy cream
- 1 Onion (Sliced)
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Shape the Patties: Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped patties. Set aside.
- Brown the Patties: In an oven-safe skillet over medium heat, brown the patties for about 3–4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove from skillet.
- Create the Gravy Base: In the same skillet, melt the butter and sauté sliced onions until soft. Whisk in the flour, stirring for about 2 minutes before adding the beef broth and cream.
- Nestle the Patties in Gravy: Return patties to the skillet, ensuring they are coated in gravy. Cover and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and let rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a lighter version, try using low-fat cream or gluten-free breadcrumbs. You can freeze patties ahead of time for quicker meals later.
