A soft and sweet bread that’s perfect for sandwiches or toast, made simply from scratch.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup water (110°F)
- 1 pinch powdered ginger (optional)
- 1 cup milk (110°F)
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
- 5 1/2 cups bread flour
- 2 tablespoons butter (melted)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water and a pinch of powdered ginger. Stir in the yeast and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the milk, sugar, salt, and oil. Stir in the yeast mixture.
- Add Flour: Gradually mix in the bread flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rising: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size (1 to 1.5 hours).
- Shape the Dough: Punch down the dough, turn it out onto a floured surface, and shape it into a loaf.
- Second Rising: Place the loaf in a greased bread pan. Cover and let it rise again until it doubles (30-45 minutes).
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Bake the Bread: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
- Brush with Butter: Brush the top with melted butter immediately after baking.
- Cool: Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Use a kitchen scale for flour for precision and ensure water and milk are at the right temperatures for yeast activation. Knead thoroughly for best results.
