A comforting apple crisp with tender spiced apples and a crunchy topping, perfect for fall.
Ingredients

- 6–7 medium apples (about 2½ lbs / 1.1 kg), peeled and sliced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (90g)
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (90g)
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar (100g)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (113g)
- Optional: pinch of salt
- Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and flour until evenly coated. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- In another bowl, mix together the oats, flour, sugars, and cinnamon. Add in the cold, cubed butter and blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped nuts if using.
- Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apple filling.
- Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly and the topping turns a golden brown.
- Allow to cool for 10–15 minutes before serving, and enjoy warm with ice cream or whipped cream!
Notes
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to three months. Reheat in the oven for best results.
