- 4–5 cups (520g-650g) all-purpose flour, spoon and leveled
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 package) instant yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup (180mL) warm water
- 1/2 cup (120mL) whole milk
- 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, sliced
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, very soft
- 3/4 cup (150g) packed brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 4 oz (115g) full-fat block cream cheese
- 5 tablespoons (70g) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups (195g) powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Whisk to mix well and set aside.
- Combine water, milk, and sliced butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat until the butter melts and the mixture feels warm but not hot.
- Whisk the egg into this warm mixture until combined.
- Pour the wet mixture into the flour mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a thick, sticky dough forms.
- Gradually add 1 cup of flour to bring the dough together into a ball.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface, adding flour as necessary to keep it from sticking until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and let sit for 20 minutes to relax the gluten.
- Roll the dough into a 14×10 inch rectangle.
- Spread softened butter on the dough, then sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon evenly on top.
- Roll it up tightly from the long side, then cut into 12 equal rolls.
- Arrange in a 9×13 inch baking dish, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes.
- Preheat your oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- While baking, prepare the icing by blending cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
- Spread the icing over warm rolls and serve.
Notes
For added variety, try adding nuts, raisins, or cocoa for a twist on the classic recipe.
