Description

A stunning and indulgent Black Velvet Cake with moist chocolate layers topped with your choice of frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup hot coffee
  • Buttercream or cream cheese frosting of your choice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and set them aside.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined after each addition.
  6. Stir in the black gel food coloring and white vinegar until the batter reaches your desired shade of black.
  7. Carefully pour in the hot coffee and mix on low speed until the batter is smooth. Be sure not to overmix.
  8. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  10. Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cakes to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost with your choice of buttercream or cream cheese frosting.
  12. Serve and enjoy your Black Velvet Cake as a perfect dessert for any occasion.

Notes

For a unique twist, try adding chocolate chips or using lemon frosting.
