Description
A stunning and indulgent Black Velvet Cake with moist chocolate layers topped with your choice of frosting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1/2 cup hot coffee
- Buttercream or cream cheese frosting of your choice
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and set them aside.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined after each addition.
- Stir in the black gel food coloring and white vinegar until the batter reaches your desired shade of black.
- Carefully pour in the hot coffee and mix on low speed until the batter is smooth. Be sure not to overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
- Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cakes to wire racks to cool completely.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost with your choice of buttercream or cream cheese frosting.
- Serve and enjoy your Black Velvet Cake as a perfect dessert for any occasion.
