Description
A crispy, shareable snack that brings smiles and festive vibes to your table with every savory bite.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium-sized onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Oil for frying
- 1 cup mayonnaise (for dipping sauce)
- 2 tablespoons ketchup (for dipping sauce)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for dipping sauce)
- 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (for dipping sauce)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (for dipping sauce)
Instructions
- Start by cutting the tops off the onions and peeling them. Next, slice each onion down to the center in a petal shape to create that iconic bloom.
- In a bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
- Dip each onion into the buttermilk, ensuring it’s thoroughly coated, then roll it in the flour mixture for an even coating.
- Heat oil in a deep pot to 375°F (190°C). Make sure your oil is hot enough to ensure crispy onions.
- Fry the onions in batches for about 3-4 minutes until they are golden brown and irresistible.
- While the onions cool, whip up the dipping sauce by mixing mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and garlic powder in a bowl.
- Serve the blooming onions warm with the dipping sauce for the ultimate delight.
Notes
For a spicier version, add chili powder to the flour mix or experiment with cheese in the batter.
