Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of loose black tea or 2 tea bags
  • 23 tablespoons of sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 45 crushed cardamom pods
  • 45 whole cloves
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the water, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, and sliced ginger in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Lower the heat and add the black tea and sugar. Simmer for about 5 minutes to develop the flavors.
  3. Pour in the milk and bring the chai back to a simmer—no need for boiling here!
  4. Strain the chai into cups, add vanilla extract if desired, and enjoy your warm drink.
