Ingredients

- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (between 100°F to 110°F)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water with active dry yeast and stir in sugar. Let sit until foamy.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, mix flour with salt.
- Mix the dough: Pour yeast mixture and melted butter into flour. Combine until dough starts to form.
- Knead: Place dough on a floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes.
- Rise: Put dough in an oiled bowl, cover and let rise for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Shape: Divide dough into 8 pieces, roll into ropes, and twist into pretzel shapes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and boil water with baking soda.
- Boil: Drop each pretzel in boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.
- Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Bake: Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Cool before serving.
Notes
Serve with hot chocolate or caramel dip. Best eaten within 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
