Description
A simple yet delightful recipe for making candied orange slices that are perfect for snacking and garnishing desserts.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 small oranges or tangelos (yielding about 18–20 slices)
- 3 cups granulated sugar
- 3 cups water
Instructions
- Slice the oranges into ¼-inch rounds using a sharp knife or mandoline for uniform thickness.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat over medium until the sugar has completely dissolved and the syrup begins to boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Add the orange slices in a single layer, ensuring they’re not overcrowded.
- Simmer for 45-60 minutes, turning occasionally until the peel appears translucent.
- Using tongs, carefully remove the slices and arrange them on a wire rack.
- Leave them uncovered at room temperature for 24-48 hours until they’re tacky but set.
- Optionally, roll the dried slices in sugar for a frosted finish or dip them in melted chocolate.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or freeze for longer storage. For uniform cooking, ensure orange slices are cut evenly.
