Crème Brûlée French Toast

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

An indulgent brunch dish that merges the rich, velvety textures of crème brûlée with thick slices of bread, offering a delightful contrast between creamy interiors and caramelized exteriors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick bread (brioche or challah)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Additional sugar for caramelizing

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated.
  3. Arrange the coated bread slices in a greased baking dish.
  4. Pour any remaining egg mixture over the top, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for the best flavor.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake the French toast for 30-35 minutes until golden and puffed.
  7. After baking, sprinkle a thin layer of sugar on top of each slice and use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until golden brown.
  8. Serve warm, optionally with fresh fruit or maple syrup.

Notes

Soak time matters for the best flavor. Use slightly stale bread for better absorption. Torch the sugar or broil it for a caramelized finish.
