Description
A sumptuous bread pudding combining rich chocolate and creamy cream cheese in a custardy bread base.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf (about 1 pound) sweet bread (brioche or challah), torn into 1-inch pieces
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 8 ounces cream cheese, chilled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
- 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate chunks or chips, divided
- Unsalted butter, for greasing the baking dish
Instructions
- Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter and scatter the torn bread pieces evenly in the dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread, gently pressing down to ensure all pieces are submerged. Allow it to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes, or cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight for best results.
- After soaking, gently stir in the cream cheese cubes and one cup of dark chocolate chunks.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Sprinkle the remaining half-cup of dark chocolate over the top and bake for 45-55 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is slightly jiggly but set.
- Allow to cool for 15-20 minutes before serving for optimal gooeyness. Serve warm.
Notes
Best served warm, can be enhanced with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce.
