  • Total Time: 65 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A comforting, creamy custard that’s simple to make and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs (room temperature preferred)
  • 2 cups whole milk (full-fat for creaminess)
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (pure preferred for enhanced flavor)
  • 0.25 tsp salt (to enhance sweetness)
  • 0.125 tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) with a roasting pan inside.
  2. Heat 4–6 cups of water until it’s hot but not boiling.
  3. In a bowl, gently whisk the eggs.
  4. Add sugar and salt then whisk until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  5. Gradually pour in the milk and vanilla, whisking until everything is well combined.
  6. Transfer this mixture into a baking dish or ramekins.
  7. Optionally, dust with nutmeg.
  8. Place the custard dish in the preheated roasting pan and slowly pour hot water in until it reaches around halfway up the sides.
  9. Bake for 45–50 minutes or 35–40 minutes for ramekins, until a knife inserted comes out clean.
  10. Turn off the oven and cool the custard in the water for about 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For substitutions, use almond extract for vanilla or switch to a non-dairy milk.
