Easy French Onion Pasta

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A cozy and indulgent pasta dish inspired by classic French onion soup, featuring caramelized onions, creamy sauce, and bubbling Gruyere cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz pasta (spaghetti or penne)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Fresh thyme for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until caramelized (about 15-20 minutes).
  3. Pour in the broth and let simmer for about 5 minutes to reduce slightly.
  4. Stir in the heavy cream, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, mixing until well combined.
  6. Transfer to a baking dish, sprinkle with Gruyere cheese, and broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  7. Garnish with fresh thyme before serving.

Notes

Serve with a crisp salad or garlic bread for a complete meal. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days, reheating gently with a splash of broth or cream.
