Ingredients

  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by mixing warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Gradually add olive oil, salt, and flour to the yeast mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Allow the loaf to rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Let the bread cool before slicing.

Notes

Kneading properly develops gluten for a chewy texture. Store in an airtight container or freeze for up to three months.
