  • Yield: 1 loaf (about 12 slices) 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A delicious and healthy homemade soft whole wheat sandwich bread that’s perfect for sandwiches, toast, and more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105°F to 115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or oil
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water and yeast, then add the honey. Allow to sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the melted butter or oil into the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add the whole wheat flour and salt, mixing until just combined.
  4. Begin adding the all-purpose flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours.
  7. Gently punch down the risen dough. Shape into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  8. Cover loosely and let rise again for 30 to 45 minutes, until it crowns about 1 inch above the rim of the pan.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190°F.
  10. Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack.

Notes

Wrap cooled loaf in plastic wrap to keep soft at room temperature. Freeze slices for longer storage.
