Description
German cabbage dumplings are a hearty and delightful dish that embodies the essence of comfort food, bringing together the soft texture of blanched cabbage leaves with a savory filling.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium head of cabbage
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Remove the core from the cabbage and carefully peel off 12-15 leaves. Blanch the leaves in boiling water for about 2-3 minutes until softened. Drain and set aside.
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until translucent. Allow to cool slightly.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, egg, breadcrumbs, sautéed onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until a dough forms.
- Lay a cabbage leaf flat and place a spoonful of the mixture in the center. Fold in the sides and roll up tightly. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
- Carefully place the dumplings into the boiling water and cook for about 20-25 minutes until they are floating and cooked through.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
Choose a medium head of cabbage that feels heavy for its size for the best leaves. Avoid overstuffing the dumplings to prevent them from bursting.
