Description

German cabbage dumplings are a hearty and delightful dish that embodies the essence of comfort food, bringing together the soft texture of blanched cabbage leaves with a savory filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head of cabbage
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Remove the core from the cabbage and carefully peel off 12-15 leaves. Blanch the leaves in boiling water for about 2-3 minutes until softened. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until translucent. Allow to cool slightly.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, egg, breadcrumbs, sautéed onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Lay a cabbage leaf flat and place a spoonful of the mixture in the center. Fold in the sides and roll up tightly. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
  5. Carefully place the dumplings into the boiling water and cook for about 20-25 minutes until they are floating and cooked through.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Choose a medium head of cabbage that feels heavy for its size for the best leaves. Avoid overstuffing the dumplings to prevent them from bursting.
