  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A delightful and easy recipe for a warm loaf of French bread, perfect for any meal or occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Add salt to the mixture, then mix in flour gradually, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it’s smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 30 minutes until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Position it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Allow the dough to rest for another 30 minutes.
  8. Make slashes on the top with a sharp knife and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Let the bread cool before slicing.

Notes

For a chewier texture, use bread flour; for sweetness, substitute honey for sugar. Can be served with soups or as a sandwich base.
