- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
- Add salt to the mixture, then mix in flour gradually, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it’s smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 30 minutes until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Position it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Allow the dough to rest for another 30 minutes.
- Make slashes on the top with a sharp knife and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let the bread cool before slicing.
Notes
For a chewier texture, use bread flour; for sweetness, substitute honey for sugar. Can be served with soups or as a sandwich base.
