Description
Deliciously soft and fluffy Amish Sweet Bread, perfect for any meal or occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 cups warm water (110°F / 43°C)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or melted butter)
- 6 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in warm water. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Mix the dough: Stir in the remaining sugar, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour into the yeast mixture. Blend until smooth.
- Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes elastic and smooth.
- First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to coat. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot for about 60 minutes or until it doubles in size.
- Shape into loaves: Punch down the dough, divide it in half, and shape each half into a loaf. Place them in greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
- Second rise: Cover the loaves again, letting them rise for another 30-40 minutes, until they rise just above the pan edges.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
- Cool: Once baked, remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool on wire racks before slicing.
Notes
Store bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for about a week. For long-term storage, slice and freeze tightly wrapped.
