Homemade Amish White Bread

  • Total Time: 90 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A comforting and easy recipe for soft and fluffy homemade Amish white bread, perfect for sandwiches or simply slathered with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Combine the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil to the flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 6-8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and cover with a cloth. Let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. Punch down the risen dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Cover again and let rise for another 30-40 minutes.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

Knead well for gluten development and ensure water temperature is around 110°F. Experiment with flavors by adding herbs or cheese.
