Description
A simple and delightful recipe for homemade bread that transforms basic ingredients into a fluffy and comforting loaf.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups warm water (105-115°F or 474g)
- 1 Tablespoon active dry yeast (or instant yeast)
- 1/4 cup honey (85g) or sugar (50g)
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 Tablespoons oil (canola or vegetable, 30 ml)
- 4 to 5 1/2 cups all-purpose or bread flour (500g-688g)
Instructions
- In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine the yeast, warm water, and a pinch of sugar or honey. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Mix in the remaining honey or sugar, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour. Stir to combine.
- Gradually add another cup of flour, mixing until the dough starts to pull away from the bowl’s sides.
- Knead the dough on medium speed for 4-5 minutes or by hand for 5-8 minutes.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled (about 1.5 hours).
- Grease two 9×5” loaf pans. Punch the dough down, divide it in half, shape into logs, and place into the pans.
- Cover and let the dough rise again until it’s about an inch above the pans (about 45 minutes).
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Bake for 30-33 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped on top.
- Invert the loaves onto a cooling rack, brush with butter, and allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Store the cooled bread in an airtight container or bag. For longer storage, refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze slices individually for up to a month.
