Homemade Croissants

  • Total Time: 140 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Experience the joy of baking with homemade croissants that are flaky, buttery, and delicious. A delightful French pastry perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk (warm)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a large bowl.
  2. Warm the milk until lukewarm, then mix it into the dry ingredients until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it’s smooth, then let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. While the dough rises, roll out the cold butter between two sheets of parchment paper until you have a rectangle.
  5. Roll the risen dough into a larger rectangle and position the butter in the center.
  6. Fold the dough over the butter, sealing the edges to encase it completely.
  7. Roll out the dough, folding it over itself, and chilling it in between each fold. Repeat this process several times to develop layers.
  8. Cut the dough into triangles and roll them from the base to the tip to shape them into crescents.
  9. Allow the formed croissants to rise for another hour until fluffy.
  10. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  11. Brush the tops with egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes, until they’re golden brown and aromatic.

Notes

Store croissants in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or freeze for longer storage. Reheat in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes.
