Description
A delightful recipe for homemade German bread, featuring a chewy crust and soft, airy interior, perfect for any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water (around 110°F/43°C)
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Add in the flour, salt, and olive oil to your yeast mixture. Mix it all together until you form a cohesive dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for approximately 10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Once risen, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Gently punch down the dough to release the air, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
- Let it rise again for 30 minutes until it puffs up a bit more.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until the crust turns golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Allow it to cool before slicing.
Notes
For added crunch, you can substitute all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour or add seeds like sunflower or pumpkin. Consider serving with honey butter or homemade jams.
