Ingredients

  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ tsp)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
  • Optional toppings (e.g., cinnamon sugar, garlic powder, cheese)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix in flour and salt, kneading the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Let the dough rise in a covered bowl for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add baking soda to the boiling water.
  5. Roll the dough into ropes and cut them into bite-sized pieces.
  6. Boil the pretzel bites for about 30 seconds, then remove them and place on a baking sheet.
  7. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Refrigerate for up to a week, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven for best results.
