- 1 1/2 to 2 pounds round steak, about 1 inch thick
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 2 cups canned tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
- Season the round steak generously with salt and pepper. Dredge it in flour, shaking off any excess.
- In a large ovenproof skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Brown the steak on both sides, then remove it and set aside.
- Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet, sautéing until softened.
- Return the browned steak to the skillet. Add in the canned tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, dried thyme, and bay leaf.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover, and transfer the skillet to the oven.
- Bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, or until the steak is tender.
Notes
Serve with creamy mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the sauce. This dish can be made ahead of time and reheats well.
