  • Total Time: 70 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian (optional)

Description

This perfect blend of bread, vegetables, herbs, and spices transforms ordinary meals into cherished memories. A Thanksgiving essential.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 cups day-old bread (sourdough or French bread, cubed)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 celery stalks, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried sage
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 to 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup cooked sausage, crumbled (or omit for a vegetarian version)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts)
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread your cubed bread on a baking sheet and let it dry out for a few hours or toast it lightly in the oven.
  2. Cook the Vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add diced onion, celery, and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine dried bread cubes with the sautéed vegetables, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, black pepper, and cinnamon. Add the crumbled sausage, nuts, and dried fruit.
  4. Moisten the Mixture: Gradually pour in the chicken or vegetable broth, stirring gently until everything is evenly moistened.
  5. Bake the Stuffing: Transfer the stuffing into a greased baking dish and cover with foil. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Serve: Allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving and enjoy!
