Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large baking sheet.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda until blended.
  3. In another bowl, combine buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and stir to combine.
  5. In a separate bowl, melt cocoa powder in boiling water until smooth, then mix it into the batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For the frosting, melt butter and stir in cocoa powder. Add milk and mix in powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
  8. Spread the frosting over the warm cake and top with nuts if desired.
