Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°F (93°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk the egg whites in a clean, dry bowl along with the cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  3. Gradually add the granulated sugar, whisking continuously until stiff peaks develop and the mixture is glossy.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract and a few drops of green food coloring if desired.
  5. Pipe the meringue into tree shapes on the prepared baking sheet using a piping bag.
  6. Bake for about 90 to 120 minutes, or until the meringue is completely dry and crisp.
  7. Let the meringues cool completely on the baking sheet.
  8. Assemble by placing the meringue trees atop the butter cookies and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
