Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°F (93°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Whisk the egg whites in a clean, dry bowl along with the cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add the granulated sugar, whisking continuously until stiff peaks develop and the mixture is glossy.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and a few drops of green food coloring if desired.
- Pipe the meringue into tree shapes on the prepared baking sheet using a piping bag.
- Bake for about 90 to 120 minutes, or until the meringue is completely dry and crisp.
- Let the meringues cool completely on the baking sheet.
- Assemble by placing the meringue trees atop the butter cookies and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
