Description
A delightful combination of soft, fluffy bread filled with rich custard, perfect for brunch or a cozy treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups whole milk (for custard)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for custard)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until well-combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add the dry mix to the wet ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled.
- To prepare the custard, heat the milk in a saucepan until almost simmering. In a bowl, whisk together the sugar, egg yolks, and cornstarch.
- Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously. Return to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until thickened and bubbling (5-7 minutes).
- Stir in the vanilla extract and butter, then cool in a bowl covered with plastic wrap.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
- Spread the cooled custard filling over the dough, keeping a small border, then roll it into a tight log, pinching seams to seal.
- Place seam-side down in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the top with melted butter before baking.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
For a dairy-free option, replace whole milk with almond or oat milk and use dairy-free butter. Experiment with custard flavor variations by adding citrus zest or cocoa powder.
