Description

A creamy, cheesy twist on the classic green bean casserole, combining fresh green beans, garlic, and Parmesan for a delicious side dish.


Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 (6 oz) can crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Steam or boil the green beans until they’re crisp-tender, about 5-7 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for approximately 5 minutes until softened.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  5. Stir in the flour and mix until smooth. Gradually whisk in the milk until you achieve a creamy consistency. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly.
  6. Reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens. Then stir in the Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
  7. Toss the green beans in the creamy sauce until well coated.
  8. Pour the mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish, and top with half of the crispy fried onions.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
  10. Sprinkle the remaining crispy fried onions over the top and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown.
  11. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a twist, substitute different cheeses or add cooked bacon for extra flavor.
