Description

A classic comfort food, Salisbury steak and gravy is a hearty dish that’s quick to prepare and budget-friendly. Perfect for weeknight dinners or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking the patties)
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 beef bouillon cubes (for gravy)
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup (for gravy)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, crushed bouillon cube, onion powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into four oval patties.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until they are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. If using, add the cremini mushrooms and cook until browned.
  5. Stir in minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and the remaining beef bouillon cubes.
  6. Whisk in the hot water, ketchup, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  7. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch with some water to create a slurry, then add it to the gravy to thicken.
  8. Return the steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and let them simmer on low for 3-5 minutes until cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
  9. Serve hot with generous spoonfuls of gravy.

Notes

Best served over creamy mashed potatoes or alongside buttery egg noodles. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days; freeze for up to three months.
