Ingredients
Scale
- 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking the patties)
- 2 cups hot water
- 2 beef bouillon cubes (for gravy)
- 1 tablespoon ketchup (for gravy)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, crushed bouillon cube, onion powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into four oval patties.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until they are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. If using, add the cremini mushrooms and cook until browned.
- Stir in minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and the remaining beef bouillon cubes.
- Whisk in the hot water, ketchup, black pepper, and garlic powder.
- In a small bowl, combine cornstarch with some water to create a slurry, then add it to the gravy to thicken.
- Return the steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and let them simmer on low for 3-5 minutes until cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
- Serve hot with generous spoonfuls of gravy.
